A mindful eating meditation

In our last blog, we provided you with some information on mindful eating and now we offer this adaptation of a mindful eating meditation for you or to teach your children to get an idea of what it involved in mindful eating.

(We’ve used a mango but you can try it with other fruit you have nearby)

Go grab a mango from the kitchen and come back to try this out. Read it all the way first and then try it again, or better yet have someone slowly read it for you as you follow along.

Bring your attention to the mango in your hand.
Close your eyes and smell the mango.
Imagine the mango blossoms,
The trees that standing the test of time and weather,
Their roots firmly planted and sturdy
The soil, dark and deep
See the rain and the sun that have gone through the mango blossoms.

Open your eyes.

See the mango in your hands once again,
How will you eat it?
Cut it in thirds with the skin still on?
Peel it and enjoy it whole?
Whichever method you choose,
notice the fragrance, feel the flesh
notice the patterns, the colours, the different textures,
How ripe is it? What variety of mango is it?
Bring the fruit between your lips and place it in your mouth
Bite into it, and close your eyes to concentrate fully on the mango flavour.
Feel the juice on your tongue and feel its sweetness in every part of your mouth.
Do not take another bite until the essence of the previous bite is gone.
Continue to eat every piece of your mango with this mindful practice.
Tasting its sweetness with your whole being
Remember to pause occasionally to reflect on any new sensations you experience.

When the fruit is gone, let the experience linger, awakening gratitude and joy.
